PRESENTED BY THE FIGHT-OR-FLIGHT MECHANISM
Congress is off this week, so the Hill Heat newsletter is on a reduced publication schedule. What does that mean, dear readers? It means that the editor-in-chief (me) is giving his staff of writers (also me) a break from deadlines. But the quality and timeliness you’ve grown to expect will be returning next week.
FIGHT
Last month, the California Public Utilities Commission proposed a terrible plan to penalize rooftop solar on behalf of PG&E’s profits. After intense organizing (discussed in last month’s Hill Heat), Gov. Gavin Newsom admitted “changes need to be made,” and the commission seems to be backing down. The vote had been expected to come this Thursday, January 27, but last Friday the commission dropped the vote from its agenda. But the fight isn’t over.
Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (D-Calif.) and Compton solar entrepreneur Kenneth Wells weighed in with a Los Angeles Times op-ed today:
“In the name of equity, economic opportunity and environmental justice, California must continue to expand rooftop solar in our communities, not constrain it with the most punitive solar policies in the nation.”
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Meet the Press, on whether he would accept any Build Back Better deal at all made with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.):
“Absolutely not. You're going to have to look at what that so-called compromise is. If it's strong, if it protects the needs of working people, if it deals with climate, I'm there. But we have to look at the details of any proposal.”
FLIGHT
Saudi Arabia has pink hydrogen. India has dust. The Supreme Court is looking to kill off wetlands. Shell’s Alberta Quest tar-sands oil refinery, supposedly a carbon-capture showcase, is a giant carbon polluter. The Winter Olympics won’t be. The New York Times tweets for terrible bosses. Tucker Carlson no longer has the hots for M&Ms.
I hope you don’t mind the shorter email today. Maybe you like it more! In any case, please let people know about what they’re missing:
